Care for a Water-Resistant Watch Posted by Mike on 17th Jul 2025 Care for a Water-Resistant Watch: Keep Time Safe from the Elements Water-resistant watches are designed to withstand splashes, rain, and even immersion in water—but they’re not indestructible. Whether you're wearing a watch rated for 30 meters or 300, proper care is essential to ensure its longevity and performance. Understand the Rating A water-resistant label doesn’t mean your watch is waterproof. A rating of 30 meters typically means it can handle minor splashes, while 100 meters or more allows for swimming or snorkeling. Always check the manufacturer’s guidelines before exposing your watch to water. Avoid Hot Water Steam from showers, hot tubs, or saunas can damage the watch’s gaskets and compromise its resistance. Always remove your watch before stepping into high-temperature environments. Rinse After Salt or Chlorine Exposure If your watch has been in saltwater or chlorinated pools, rinse it with fresh water immediately after. Salt and chemicals can corrode the seals and metal parts over time. Check Seals and Gaskets Regularly The rubber gaskets that keep water out can wear down. It’s a good idea to have your watch pressure-tested and serviced every 1–2 years, especially if you use it around water often. Use the Crown Carefully Never pull out or adjust the crown (the knob on the side of the watch) while it’s wet. This can break the water-tight seal and allow moisture inside. Dry It Properly If your watch gets wet, wipe it dry with a soft cloth. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight or using a heat source to dry it. A water-resistant watch is built for adventure, but like any precision instrument, it needs routine care and attention. Treat it well, and it will continue to serve you reliably—rain or shine.
